So, I posted about Natalie's Glow Worm last night and it got me thinking about my childhood. I had a Glow Worm the first time they came out (back in the 80's). Everyone my age probably did. And now my daughter has one too. I see a lot of the toys that I had when I was little have made a comeback...Pound Puppies, Rainbow Brite, My Little Pony. I remember playing with Barbies when I was little and my mom would tell me that she used to play with Barbies when she was little too. I remember thinking "they had Barbies back then?" and how wierd it seemed. One day soon, Natalie will be playing with Barbies and will think the same thing. Of course, when I was little, I'd have to wait until a birthday or Christmas to receive a Barbie as a gift or I'd have save up $20 to buy a Barbie that actually came with an accessory or an outfit. Today, you can buy a Barbie for like $3.99 and there are a million to choose from. And that just got me to thinking about some other things...I used to have Punky Brewster hi-tops a Goofy lunchbox (the metal kind) and Wonder Woman underoos. I used to crimp my hair and wore a pony tail on the side of my head.I used to have a pink Barbie alarm clock and I can still remember what it would play when the alarm went off...."Wake up Ken, I dreamed I was dancing at the Disco again. Me too Barbie, and I hope it comes true. But now is the time we have something to do. We're the alarm and we always call. When we're set, we say WAKE UP ALL..."Remember Nerds Cereal? Matt and I used to love that stuff. It was 2 different colored cereals packaged in 1 box, just like the candy. I don't remember it being especially good. It was more of the excitement of getting to buy a sugared cereal instead of Chex or Cheerios.I remember when cartoons were only on Saturday mornings. Matt and I would get up at the crack of dawn to watch Smurfs, PeeWee's Playhouse, Fraggle Rock, Inspector Gadget and the Wuzzles. Having them on only once a week seemed to make them special. My kids can watch cartoons 24 hours a day thanks to Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and the Disney Channel. When I was a kid, the Disney Channel was a premium channel you had to pay for, like HBO and Showtime. And there were only 1 of each premium channel. 1 HBO, 1 Showtime and 1 Cinemax. Now there are 10 of each and still nothing to watch.I remember our first microwave and our first VCR. I remember my first record album (Debbie Gibson - Out of the Blue) and my first CD (The Lion King Soundtrack). I remember my uncle Cliff having an 8-track player in his car!I remember our first cordless phone. It had a foot long antenna that you had to pull out every time you used the phone. This was long before call waiting, caller ID, *69, 3-way calling and speed dial.I remember watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the movie theater and watching Harry and the Henderson's at the drive-in.Thinking about all of this stuff is making me feel old....
